"A clean kitchen is the first step to a healthy meal."
~ Anthony Bourdain
Microwaves are a kitchen essential, but they can quickly become one of the grimiest appliances if left unchecked. Splattered sauces, lingering odors, and hidden gunk build up fast. Thankfully, you don’t need harsh chemicals to get it sparkling clean again. With a few simple ingredients and essential oils, you can naturally freshen and disinfect your microwave—leaving it clean enough to reheat with confidence.
Store-bought cleaners often contain synthetic fragrances and chemicals that can leave behind residues in a space where you heat your food. A DIY natural cleaner gives you peace of mind, knowing you’re not exposing your family to toxins every time you nuke a plate of leftovers.
Non-toxic and safe for food prep spaces
No harsh fumes or chemical residues
Budget-friendly using household staples
Effective at cutting grease, loosening grime, and neutralizing odors
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup water
5 drops Lemon essential oil
5 drops Tea Tree, Abode, or Purify essential oil
Optional: a slice of lemon or orange
Pour vinegar and water into a microwave-safe bowl.
Add essential oils and the citrus slice (if using).
Place the bowl in the microwave and heat on high for 3-5 minutes until it steams.
Leave the door closed for 5 more minutes to let the steam loosen grime.
Carefully remove the bowl and wipe down the interior with a clean cloth.
For tough spots, dip your cloth in the remaining liquid and scrub.
Vinegar: Naturally cuts through grease and disinfects
Water: Creates steam to soften stuck-on messes
Lemon Essential Oil: Adds a fresh scent and helps dissolve grease
Tea Tree, Abode, or Purify: Offer antibacterial and odor-fighting properties
Citrus Slice: Boosts aroma and cleaning power
Note: Always use microwave-safe containers and be careful when handling hot liquids.
Using this steam cleaner once a week can keep your microwave fresh, clean, and odor-free. It takes just minutes, and you won’t have to deal with built-up grime or weird food smells again.
This simple switch to a natural method is one small step toward a cleaner, healthier kitchen.
